    This photograph was taken at a ceremony held on the South Lawn of the White House in honor of the freed American hostages who were held in Iran. The ceremony, held on January 27, 1981, included a speech by President Ronald Reagan, who was just seven days into his first administration. 66 United States citizens, diplomats, and military personnel were held in the U.S. embassy in Tehran beginning on November 4, 1979 and lasting for 444 days. On January 20, 1981, the remaining 52 hostages still in captivity were finally released.

    In this photograph, President Ronald Reagan kicks a soccer ball to American soccer star Steve Moyers on October 14, 1982. Soccer icon Pelé, standing at left, was also a part of the group kick around. Pelé and Moyers were invited to the White House that day to put on a soccer demonstration for two local youth soccer teams -- the Green Raiders and the Stompers -- gathered in the Rose Garden. Pelé and Moyers first met with President Reagan in the Oval Office. Following their demonstration, Pelé (born Edson Arantes do Nascimento) spoke to the young players. President Reagan then tossed the ball and the two teams played a game in the Rose Garden.

The trio were shot in the Map Room on the Ground Floor of the White House as part of a photo shoot for the cover of "Sports Illustrated" magazine by Pete Souza on November 11, 1984. The Georgetown Hoyas won the NCCA Division I Men's Championship the previous April. The Hoyas championship was the first for the university and made Thompson the first African-American head coach to lead his team to victory.

Originally from South Carolina, Pitts became acquainted with politicians and diplomats while working as a barber at the Sheraton-Carlton Hotel in Washington, D.C. In 1970, he was invited to open a small barber shop in the basement of the West Wing, where he served as barber to presidents Richard M. Nixon, Gerald R. Ford, Ronald Reagan, and George H. W. Bush.
